Easter Sunday, unfortunately, is a distant memory for most, with everyone back at work and school now, but what a weekend it was, and especially for those visiting the Western Lake District.
Easter Sunday was not just a fantastic day forall whot were visiting or staying in the area (and residents too, of course,) with 4 consecutive days of fine weath,er but it was also the 100th anniversary of Britain’s most legendary mountain climb, Central Buttress on Scafell. Back on April 2,0th 19Siegfriedfied Herford & George Sanson were the first people to accomplish this , climb, and what a feeling it must have been for them to have achieved this with the merest of equipment, no helmets or safety gear, wearing blazers and trousers, quite remarkable.
Lake District
Of course, this section of rock has not changed, and despite more knowledge and better equipment, Central Buttress is still a route for experienced climbers. But there are many other climbs for a variety of abilities. A great insight into them can be found on the UK Climbing website by clicking here.
The Lake District is lucky enough to be home to some of the best climbers and guides in the UK. Climbers from outside of the region wishing to climb, especially some of the more challenging routes such as Central Buttress, then it is well worth checking out blogs from Lake District climbers such as Leo Holding and highly qualified guides such as West Lakes Adventure when looking for expert rock climbing activity days around the Scafell area.
Wasdale and Eskdale Valley’s
The Wasdale and Eskdale Valley’s where Scafell towers between, are home to a plethora of climbing routes, which is no surprise when gazing up at the rocky and craggy landscape that makes up this, the most dramatic of locations in the Lake District. Accessible from Eskdale or Wasdale Valley, Scafell and the surrounding fells will never disappoint climbers and walkers alike who take pleasure in the challenge as well as the peacefulness.
To finish, a great comment from Katy Forrester, a Scarpa-sponsored member of the GB Ice Climbing team who lives in the Eden Valley, “So, go to Scafell. It’s not important what you do. Just go, and feel the magic of the place.”
